.. but the years are short.
Like many of you, I read Glennon’s wonderful blog post : Don’t Carpe Diem. And I felt a little bit guilty. Because I have said to new mothers ‘enjoy this time, it goes by too fast’. I meant it too. And I am not even a little old lady.
But let me tell you something that I know without a doubt in my mind : Parenting is hard. But most of us who have children already know that, right? So when I say ‘enjoy this time, it goes by too fast‘, I say it with 8 years of experience under my belt. That trip to Target, all by myself.. turns out it wasn’t as amazing as I thought it would be. I miss my buddies who are in school now. Even the one who threw an epic tantrum at Target that lasted half an hour (I have videotaped it for replaying at her wedding reception). It does go by too fast. And that is what every little old lady means when they tell us to enjoy this time in our lives. They don’t mean that we should enjoy the tantrums, the sleepless nights, the repetition, the mundanity… no, they mean to take a minute or two to step outside the chaos, and just take it all in and realize that it is hard but it is amazing and so worth it.
I just wanted to say that. I have always been partial to little old ladies, so I just wanted to stick up for them a little bit.
